Many people have notions about bed bugs that are simply not true. In fact, much of what people have come to believe about bed bugs, is information that was believed for years and nobody bothered to check to see if it was credible.
Myth #1 – Bed Bugs Fly
Many people think that if you get bed bugs in your home, they will get from room to room by flying. Bed bugs do not have wings so they can’t fly. If they are caught by a breeze they will float a little bit but they can’t actually fly. Bed bugs crawl at the rate of about one meter a minute.
Myth #2 – Bed Bugs Bite Only at Night
Bed bugs are nocturnal but if they get hungry, they will feed at any time of day. Many people used to think that if they left the lights on to trick the bed bugs into thinking it was day, they would not bite. Unfortunately this does not work.
Myth #3 – Bed Bugs Only Live in Mattresses
Bedbugs can be found on many different surfaces. They are on chairs, chesterfields, railings, and ceilings, as well as on mattresses. Though they are found on beds, they tend to spread to other areas of the home as well. Bed bugs will live anywhere in the home that is a high traffic area and provides them food.
Myth #4 – Bed Bugs Prefer Unsanitary Conditions
Having more bed bugs in areas of low-income housing is not because of their preference to live there. It can be difficult to get rid of bed bugs and it costs money to call in an exterminator. Any location is vulnerable to bed bugs but some people will have a more difficult time getting rid of them due to the lack of available resources.
